  • Exclusive transformer design saves valuable time during the installation process. No more mounting the transformer in a remote location and running wires to various points. With NuTone’s patented system, just run the wire, then connect and drop the entire transformer in the junction box. Two simple low voltage connections later and the chime is installed and working. You can move on to the next project.

    • Basic smooth white cover with rounded corners for a fresh design that blends with builder finishing techniques
    • Two-note chime for front door, so no guest will be missed
    • Order as standard pack of 24 to assist with your planning and still retain that economical edge
    • Chime wires to a junction box transformer so you are assured of uninterrupted service and are never dependent upon batteries (transformer C915, included)
    • Two lighted rectangular shaped pushbuttons with non-stick action included so you have one less thing to buy and the convenience of a complete package
    • Refer to your local municipality building codes to be sure you are installing chimes that adhere to code since they vary by region
    • Junction box transformer design makes for an easy and quick connection to low voltage wiring, insert into the single-gang junction box, and the transformer is safely concealed behind the wall

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mine stopped working after 3 years The doorbell just stopped working. It is difficult to determine if its the transmitter or the doorbell unit. The whole system came as a builder's kit when we built our home. DON'T PURCHASE THIS! Now I have to figure out how to replace it without hiring someone to do it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful product. Chime barely audible and no volume control Typical builder grade junk. Gonna purchase a 'real' doorbell today, one that I can hear, and it won't be a NuTone.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Stopped working 3 years in. Able to switch wires to keep unit. Builder spec unit stopped working about 3 years in. I switched plungers for front and rear and wire from front to rear and it works now (using rear portion of chime). For some reason, front stopped working. Maybe I'll get 3 years from rear solenoid.....Good luck folks.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very poor product Mine stopped working before 2 years and lot of my neighbors had the same issue (I am in a new development) with this builder installed unit. I cam to look for a manual and found this complaint forum. I guess time for me to go buy a product from a more reliable vendor.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stopped working after 18 months Nothing different from anyone else. Simply wanted to add another statistic to the cheap doorbell used by Ryan Homes. Ours stopped working around 18 months of moving in to our newly built home. Same model NuTone BK142LWH-1 Rev A. Save people the trouble and stop installing this junk! You could barely hear it even when it did work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from My experience is the same My experience is the same. Nu-Tone model BK142WH-1 Rev A stopped working after 18 months. I too have a Ryan home. Light on the outside door bell switch stopped working and no sound. Since others have the same problem with the same product I stop trouble shooting and look for a replacement.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad Builder Door Bell Designed to only work for one year! Died the week after my new Standard Pacific Home one year warranty expired.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stopped Working after 18 months Doorbell stopped working shortly after the home warranty ran out. Light on the push button switch at the door also went out. All connections looked good. Power from the 16V A/C transformer was also good (measured 20V). Apparently the solenoid that moves the chime striker stopped working. Since I don't have a back door bell I moved the wire from the front door to the back door circuit. You can see these connections as soon as you take the plastic cover off. So now I at least have something that works. I plan to change out the entire doorbell in the future. It never was very loud. Mine also came installed by Ryan Homes.

  • How to remove and replace with up grade

Sound is not loud enough, will replace with a better unit
    Asked by: Bob
Thank you for your question on the model BK142LWH wired door chime. The installation instructions for the model BK142 are on our web site for your convenience. It will show how the unit was installed. You may want to consider the LA70MA for a replacement. It would be louder and has a volume control on it.

Can the volume be adjusted on this model? How?

    Asked by: New Home Owner
Thank you for your question on the model BK142LWH door chime. There is no volume control on the BK142LWH door chime and no way to make it louder. If you need a louder chime you would need to either replace the chime or add another chime at another location in the house.

Can I upgrade and use the same transformer that came with my original BK142LWH?

I want a louder sound than the BK142LWH. With the transformer "built in", I want to know if I can upgrade to another of your products and use the same transformer. Or, will the new transformer have to be newly wired to a remote location.
    Asked by: Sharon
Thank you for your question on the model BK142LWH door chime. To go to a louder chime you would need to use the LA174WH, which is a recessed chime. You would not be able to use the currently installed transformer with this chime. Please contact the Technical Service Department at 888-336-6151 for further assistance.

Is there a replacement cover for the j box?

    model number BK142LWH
    Asked by: bobby
Thank you for your question. The j-box would be covered by the plate on the transformer. We do not offer the cover as a separate part. You would have to order a new transformer if you need the cover. Please call Technical Support at 1-888-336-6151 if you need further assistance.
